The Miracle League of Dubuque Complex is a culmination of the hard work and dedication of many people. The dream began with Coach Tom Witry's passion for baseball and individuals with disabilities and his belief in the dignity and value of every person. In his early coaching days, Coach Witry involved players with disabilities teams. He continued that practice when he invited Matthew Santjer, an avid baseball fan who has autism, to assist with keeping the book for the Dubuque Hempstead baseball team. That led to a special day when Matthew was put in a game as a pinch runner on third base and sored the game wining run. The crowd roared, both teams cheered and Matthew's face lit up with joy. The conviction was affirmed that when everyone plays together, understanding, joy respect and appreciation naturally follow! After his retirement, Coach Witry began to explore the possibility of building a baseball facility for individuals with special needs. He and his wife, Carol, contacted Matthew's parents, Merle and Mary Santjer. Together, they jointed the national Miracle League organization and formed a Miracle League of Dubuque Board of Directors.
Coach Witry's vison and the passion and generosity of Miracle League of Dubuque's dedicated volunteers and donors have made a dream come true of countless individuals with disabilities, their families and the community.
